Wilderness : the true story of Simon Girty, the renegade
Published in Unknown Binding by 4Winds Pub. Group ()
Average review score:

A Masterpiece in two drawn acts.A true to life extravaganza. Part one of the story of the "renegade" Simon Girty is just dying to be made into a movie. The story itself is gripping. A tale of a boy driven from location to location by circumstances around him. Captured by the indians and raised for years with them we see him as he crosses the paths of names that live in history. And ALL OF IT TRUE. The illustrations are masterful, accurate and just a pleasure. Tim Truman has made a masterpiece in two acts. Don't let the graphic novel format fool you this is history and art and storytelling all in one stroke! Buy it somewhere anywhere!

Wilderness plots : tales about the settlement of the American land
Published in Unknown Binding by Morrow ()
Average review score:

A Little GemFifty tiny tales, each exquisitely told, chronicle the settling of the Ohio River Valley. Scott Russell Sanders is a fabulous storyteller who collects the curiosities that would have travelled far by word of mouth in an earlier time. Sanders calls these "tales, stories provoked by germs of fact, rather than history." The characters are mostly forgotten--Indians, surveyors and drunks, flustered judges, animals fierce and tame, gravepickers, newborns, clergy and lovers. Taken together, the stories function like a fine illustration in a history book, artfully fleshing out the facts so that our understanding is deepened. This is a perfect book for a history lover, a bedtime reader or a lover of the quirky. I was glad to find it still in print.

Wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada and Central Valley
Published in Paperback by Lone Pine Publishing (June, 2003)
Average review score:

A beautifully illustrated and easy to use guideAlthough I own and use many wildflower identification books, most are lacking in some respect...organization, quality of photographs, etc. I stumbled across this book at a State Park ranger station shop, and was immediately impressed with the excellent quality photographs and the organization of information. The introduction contains much valuable data about elevational zones and where to find the flowers. There's a Quick Key of tiny photographs to steer you to the plant family and page number where you'll find the flower in question. I'm recommending this guide to all my friends.

Moving story of a 14 yr old girl who survived auschwitz.Imagine, you are a 14 yr old girl growing up in a small, rural Hungarian town... surrounded by your loved ones. Slowly, hatred is surrounding you and all your friends and relatives are taken away to a death camp--Auschwitz. You survive alone among your family and come back to your "home". Your neighbors, who looted your furniture, resent your coming back. Your family is gone. Their business is gone...but your memories keep bringing you back. After you are a grown woman, a grandmother, you get a degree in history and write a book of your little town. You still search for the answer to the question-- WHY? Dr. Stessel wrote a moving history of her little town. Life was idyllic and life was cut short. The groping for the details tells many stories.

Witch Doctor's Apprentice.
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Publishing Company (January, 1975)
Average review score:

Amazing Amazon adventures!I own several copies of this out-of-print book and have enjoyed reading it. I still re-read it from time-to-time. Ms. Maxwell died a few months ago, but her work lives on in the pages of this enchanting book. She had many adventures while looking for medicinal plants. One of these adventures included meeting el tigre--the jaguar! I am lucky to have been included among her friends. She was a woman ahead of her time, and is still remembered fondly by many people in the Amazon jungle.

With Pen and Pencil on the Frontier in 1851: The Diary and Sketches of Frank Blackwell Mayer
Published in Paperback by Minnesota Historical Society (October, 1986)
Average review score:

With Pen & Pencil on FrontierFrank Mayer's book not only gives us a written enthnographic view of the frontier life but also a "photographic" view of life on the frontier in North America. His book is a fingerprint in time for a place that will never be seen again.

Work in the New Economy: Flexible Labor Markets in Silicon Valley
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Publishers (15 August, 2002)
Average review score:

Clears away the hype on the new economyThis book provides the clearest analysis of work in the new economy of anything I've read, using Silicon Valley as the prototypical region of the future of work. It cuts through all the hype, and analyzes both the region's dynamism, but also the reasons behind the volatility, insecurity, and rise in contract/temporary employment. It provides innovative and useful suggestions for ways of increasing security for workers in the region's labor market, while maintaining the region's dynamism. Should be read by every elected official and policy maker in the country, and anyone else concerned about the changing nature of work in the new economy.

Worked over: The Corporate Sabotage of an American Community
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (May, 2003)
Average review score:

Excellent explanation of historic corporate take-overs!As a history major with little knowledge of legal and economic technicalities, I have long puzzled over how such devices as "trusts" allowed large corporations to greedily gobble up the fruits of the industrial revolution. Now I know! This book should be a "must read" for anyone who has difficulty believing that we have long had class warfare in America. Enron et al have had a long history of exploiting the labor of the people who work for them, as well as the interests of the public . This book tells the story of one of the first such successful corporate sabatoge efforts ... but, sadly, not the last! Very well documented AND very readable. (I could almost hear the theme from "Jaws" as I read.) Quite a scholarly feat!
